about

Written specifically for Kate Short's "Oculus,” this work balances frequency spectrum in conjunction with tonal arrangement while also testing laws of acoustics. This composition emerged from an investigation while performing a constant G Major chord for exactly 24 minutes through a series of 6 electronic synth instruments. A further evaluation transcended into 12 mono channels that play simultaneously with each instrument playing its polar opposite counterpart. These reversed polarity channels test and examine acoustic phase occurrences within the Oculus. To induce these occurrences, the instruments employ the "Fourier Waveform Series": the sine, square, triangle and sawtooth wave. These waveforms are added together and are all composed in G Major (also known in the Baroque era as, "the key of benediction"). A choir can be heard in the same key circumventing and defying the frequency and phase occurrences observed in the other channels. The added notes and channels fluctuate augmented variables, bending its tonal arrangement, transposition, and semitone while challenging the listener to question whether they are still hearing the chord as Major or if it is being bent. "The Sum of All Bent Lines" can only be truly heard inside the Oculus; if it is played as a simple stereo file, many of the "lines"/waves are lost in acoustic cancellation.
